Habitat: On wet sandy beach; associated with Poa pratensis, C. pellita, Potentilla norvegica, and Verbena hastata. The habitat was essentially a transition zone between the black oak woodland on the contiguous moraine and the shoreline wet marsh dominated by Carex stricta. Locally abundant, forming an almost colony-like zone (with occasional plants of the similar C. scoparia intermingled). Pistillate scales acute to acuminate and sharp-tipped; per 3.8-4.2 X 1.1-1.2mm, L/W 3.2-3.5; anths. 1.2-1.6mm.
