Habitat: Northern wet-mesic forest; Betula papyrifera (1 dom.)--Thuja occidentalis (2 dom.), with Betula alleghaniensis and Abies balsamea. Understory with Taxus canadensis & seedlings & saplings of Sorbus americana, Abies balsamea, Acer saccharum, A. spicatum; herb layer (very sparse) with Gymnocarpum dryopteris, Dryopteris spinulosa, s.l., Carex arctata, C. brunnescens, Viola sp., & Galium triflorum. Common in swampy forest, only occasional in maple forest.
