Habitat: Forest understory. Northern wet-mesic forest; Betula papyrifera (1 dom.)--Thuja occidentalis (2 dom.), with Betula alleghaniensis and Abies balsamea. Shrub layer: seedlings and saplings of Abies balsamea, Sorbus decora, Acer spicatum, A. saccharum. Herb layer: Gymnocarpum dryopteris, Dryopteris spinulosa, D. intermedia, Carex arctata, C. brunnescens, Viola sp., Galium triflorum, very sparse. Common in swampy forest, only occasional in maple forest.
