Habitat: Edges of shallow, intermittently swampy depression in Acer saccharum-Quercus borealis forest, with Ulmus rubra, Ostrya virginiana. Soil: wet, black silty loam. Assoc.: carices: convoluta, deweyana, digitalis, hirtifolia, pensylvanica, sparganioides, amphibola. Additional assoc.: Polygonatum biflorum, Smilacina racemosa, Smilax illinoensis, Actaea pachypoda, Ranunculus septentrionalis, R. recurvatus, Thalictrum dioicum, Geum sp., Prunus virginiana, Impatiens capensis, Scrophularia lanceolata, Galium triflorum. No ferns present. Common; in small tussocks.
