Habitat: Rooted in humus between mossy boulders. Southern mesic forest; major dominants: Acer saccharum (1 dom.) & Ulmus rubra (2 dom.); assoc.: Adiantum pedatum, Athyrium angustum, Arisaema triphyllum, Caulophyllum thalictroides, Conopholis ameriana, Polygonatum biflorum, Staphylea trifolia, Acer saccharum saplings.
Occurrence Remarks: Loosely cespitose perennial with from 13 to 24 shoots (but only 1 to 6 fertile) per tuft.
