Habitat:
Many young saplings coming up in partially-cut woods of Acer saccharum. Next to dense thicket of Staphylea trifoliata. Occasional Ulmus thomasii upslope. Steep N-facing slope with dry creek at bottom. Found in 1 sq-m plot with Osmorhiza longistylis, Polymnia canadensis, Hydrophyllum appendiculatum, Anemone acutiloba, Laportea canadensis, Ribes missouriense, Impatiens pallida. Under/between the sparse canopy of Acer saccharum, these widely spaced and forest-grown with narrow crowns. This was the only site in S. Wis. seen with any such fortuitous butternut regeneration!
