Habitat: Forming lawns of pseudoculms in shady understory thick with prickly ash. Only 15 m off the road, and scattered throughout, in mesic Acer saccharum woods select-cut within last few years. In 5 sq-m plots of 80 sampled, with Carex sparganioides, C. hirtifolia, C. blanda, Parthenocissus vitacea, Geranium maculatum, Fraxinus pensylvanica, Solidago flexicaulis, Tilia americana, Ranunculus septentrionalis, Thalictrum dioicum, Circaea lutetiana Carya cordiformis, Sambucus canadensis, Zanthoxylum americanum, Rubus idaeus, R. allegheniensis, R, occidentalis. Under Carya cordiformis, Tilia americana, Quercus rubra, Acer saccharum, Fraxinus americana, Ostrya virginiana.
