Habitat: In open to fairly dense, young woods. Somewhat droughty, sandy soil. Overstory of Pinus strobus, P. resinosa, Betula papyrifera, and Rhamnus frangula. Ground layer of Pteridium aquilinum, Rubus strigosus, Danthonia spicata, Aster ciliolatus, and Artemisia ludoviciana. Locally common. This one a 4 m tall shrub. Seedlings abundant in area.
