Habitat:
Well-established in woodlot. 50-75% shade. Overstory of young Pinus strobus and Populus tremuloides, with understory of Viburnum lentago, Ilex verticillata, and Prunus virginiana. Ground layer of Rubus pubescens, Fragaria virginiana, Waldsteinia fragarioides, Sanicula marilandica, and young Cornus rugosa. This one a small tree about 3 m tall. Nearly unaffected by forest tent caterpillar outbreak.
