Habitat: Cold spring-fed calcareous (?) seepage bogs and medows in wet Thuja occidentalis- Populus spp., Acer spp. woods. Extensive Thuja woods, more or less dense shade with Tsuga canadensis, Abies balsamea, Picea glauca, Acer apicatum, Rubus parvifours, Actaea rubra, Carex pedunculata, Ledum groenlandicum, Vaccinium Oxycoccus (rare), Dentaria diphylla, Mertensia paniculata. Shrub 1.3 m tall, in dense shade of Thuja woods. Leaves sparsely pilosulous above, on veinsbeneath, more or less densely on petioles. Young stems withmany fine bristle-like spines, old stems unarmed except for strong stipular thorns [see label]Sheet 2[2]
