Habitat: Dense rich mesic prairie on huge sand plain (lowest outwash terrace); Andropogon gerardii (1 dominant)-Schizachyrium scoparium (2 dominant), with Artemisia ludoviciana, Baptisia alba var. macrophylla, Populus tremuloides saplings, Poa pratensis, Oenothera perennis, Rosa blanda, and Veronicastrum virginicum. Near old hay barn foundation. One clump with 67 fertile culms, 15 cm across at base, 64 cm across at top (= spread of culms); per. 3.5--4.2 X 2.3--3.5 mm.
