Habitat: Brushy prairie along the railroad, with Andropogon gerardi, Sorghastrum nutans, Tradescantia ohiensis, Lespedeza capitata, Solidago rigida, Quercus macrocarpa, Populus tremuloides, Corylus americana, Liatris aspera. Low clumps, up to 1.2m tall; stems slender. Female. Flowering stems usually long, unbranched, or usually many fewer are branches than in male clumps (see 16710). Tips of bracts black; stigma bright red early in anthesis.
