Brushy prairie along the railroad, with Andropogon gerardi, Sorghastrum nutans, Tradescantia ohiensis, Lespedeza capitata, Solidago rigida, Quercus macrocarpa, Populus tremuloides, Corylus americana, Liatris aspera. Low clump, up to 1.2m tall; stems slender, more or less decumbent. Tips of bracts black; anthers red before anthesis.
