Habitat: Rare in Carex, Chamaedaphne calyculata, Sphagnum bog, but more common at edges with Picea mariana, Alnus rugosa. 1.5m tall. Stem, buds, petioles and midrib (on underside of leaf in lower half) bright red. Leaves glaucous beneath. Specimen not noticeably fragrant when fresh.
