Habitat: In former grassy water-run in bottom of small valley with cultivated fields on both sides, now brushy and overgrown with Ulmus americana, Prunus americana, Acer rubrum, A. negundo, all of which have invaded during the last 20yrs. Common. Small tree 4.5m tall, 20cm diameter at base, with many stiff thorn-like branchlets. Nearing the end of flowering period. Flowers with pleasant light fragrance. Styles and petals pink in bud, fading nearly to white in late anthesis.
