Habitat: Oak woods dominated by Quercus alba, with Carya cordiformis, C. ovata, Prunus serotina, Fraxinus nigra (!), Xanthoxylum americanum, Podophyllum peltalum, Ribes missouriense, Osmorhiza claytonii, Circaea quadrisulcata. Ungrazed now but probably was at times in the past. Ridegtop. Sapling in shade. Buds bright orange.
