Habitat:
On W-facing slope near top ridge, formerly oak savanna, now heavily pastured for many decades. This species common, with Carya ovata, Ostrya virginiana, Acer rubrum, Ulmus americana (the last ones are dying from Dutch Elm Disease). Small tree 10 m tall, 30 cm in diameter. Bark dark, deeply furrowed. Leaves dark green above, whitened below. Individual trees of this species here in this grove vary considerably in acorn shape, some with the cup covering only half of the nut which easily falls free at maturity; this tree is at the other extreme with the cup almost completely covering the nut which cannot fall free unless the cup is chewed by squirrels.
