Habitat: Old pasture slope at base of bluffs along river valley, with Ulmus americana, U. rubra, Rhus glabra, Juniperus virginiana, Prunus serotina, Xanthoxylum, Betula papyrifera, Vitis riparia. BER. Common, invasive. Very young tree 5 m tall, 15 cm diam. Bark light gray. Male inflorescences abundant, readily falling, 1-2 from axils of last year's leaves.
