Habitat: Dry prairie halfway up steep, WNW-facing hillside; thin silt-loam soil over dolomite bedrock (Ordovician). Poa pratensis dominant, Helianthus occidentalis the most common herb, with Sisyrinchium albidum, Carex richardsonii, Potentilla simplex, Castilleja coccinea, Lithospermum canescens, Antennaria plantaginifolia, Juniperus virginiana, Crataegus, Prunus viginiana, Cornus racemosa.
