Habitat: Rich northern hardwood forest (Fagus grandifolia-1 dom., Acer saccharum-2 dom., with Tsuga canadensis and Betula alleghaniensis); groundlayer assoc.: Lycopodium lucidulum, Dryopteris intermedia, Carex laxiflora, Ranunculus recurvatus, and Acer saccharum. and A. spicatum seedlings. Low spot in woods with Lycopodium dendroideum, Dryopteris intermedia, Carex arctata, and C. intumescens. One clump with spreading culms, 92 cm across.
