Habitat: Forming a thick growth almost to the center of the shallow muddy pond about 30 ft. in dia. Muddy pond: Scirpus cyperinus, Eleocharis smallii. Pond would normally be dried up, but wet summer has kept it filled. The only other vascular plants in the water. are the common Lemna minor and the rare Spirodella polyrhiza. Ungrazed for at least 17 years. Former prairie and oak savanna prior to 1840's. Where the tips of branches emerge & remain above the water, they become shorter, thicker, & greener. i.e. changing from f. aquatica (Koehne) Fassett to f. terrestris (Koehne) Fassett. This forma is occasional on the wet mud surrounding pond. Sheet 2 of 2.
