Habitat: Southern mesic forest (Acer saccharum-1 dom. in terms of freq., w/ Fraxinus, Celtis, and Ostrya) on low flat middle-level river terrace; soil a dark brown, presumably circumneutral silt loam; habitat moister than adjoining forest on upper terrace. Assoc.: Carex blanda, C. pedunculata, C. laxiculmis var. copulata, C. sparganioides, Oryzopsis racemosa, Smilax hispida, Isopyrum biternatum, Thalictrum dioicum, Sanguinaria canadensis, Toxicodendron rydbergii, Zizia aurea, and Matteuccia struthiopteris in moist spots.
