Habitat: medium to dry sandy moss-covered Jack Pine/Black Oak open woods, often growing in large clumps usually in openings in canopy, rarely alone. Found all along road on both sides for a least a mile- 100's of plants. Assoc: maianthemum canadense, Smilacina stellata, Trientalis borealis, Pteridium aquilinum, Anemone quinquefolia, Gaultheria procumbens. Also seen with Comandra umbellata, Lithospermum canescens, Viloa pedata, Lupinus perennis
