Habitat: Old-growth southern mesic forest (Acer saccharum-Quercus rubra-Tilia americana-Q. alba); sedges on slightly exposed soil of small trailside knolls. Immediate assoc.: Carex blanda, C. grisea, C. oligocarpa, Geum canadense, Parthenocissus (?P. vitacea), and maple, oak, and elm seedlings. Nearby assoc.: Caulophyllum thalictroides, Circaea lutetiana ssp. canadensis, Geranium maculatum, and Viola pubescens.
Occurrence Remarks: Cespitose (not as dense as C. blanda), medium-green (slightly darker in color than C. blanda, slightly lighter than C. grisea), with 1--9 erect sterile shoots and 2--20 ascending (distally arching) to wide-spreading fertile culms per clump.
