Habitat: Sand barrens on level sandy ground slightly higher than adjacent floodplain, secondary succession on abandoned ag. land, open in places or with thin cover of shrubs & pole-sized trees (Quercus ellipsoidalis, Corylus americana, Pinus banksiana); light semishade & somewhat closed turf of Poa compressa & P. pratensis under huge lone Quercus ellipsoidalis tree; assoc.: Asclepias syriaca, Carex brevior, C. pensylvanica, Elytrigia repens, Fragaria virginiana, Hieracium sp., & Rubus setosus complex.
Occurrence Remarks: Sheet 3 of 3. Most primocanes & floricanes erect to ascending, occasional canes trailing; fruits black. Very abundant. Plants more luxuriant in more shade & moister soil at upper edge of floodplain.
