Habitat: Rich Acer saccharum-Quercus rubra-Fraxinus americana woods with Betula papyrifera & Populus grandidentata; understory: Tilia americana, Carya cordiformis saplings; groundlayer: Adiantum pedatum, Athyrium filix-femina var. angustum, Botrychium virginianum, Carex blanda, C. hirtifolia, Cryptotaenia canadensis, Mitella diphylla, Osmorhiza claytonii, Phryma leptostachya, Smilax hispida, and Trillium grandiflorum. Two clumps, one of 8 fertile and 17 sterile, the other of 10 fertile and 10 sterile shoots; sterile shoots spreading; culms wide-spreading, touching the ground.
