Habitat: Found in most mucky bottom areas in water from 1-4.5 m deep. Common assoc.: (Potamogeton pusillus) small pondweed, (Potamogeton richardsonii) clasping-leaf pondweed, (Potamogeton zosteriformis) flat-stem pondweed, (Potamogeton praelongus) white-stem pondweed, (Ceratophyllum demersum) coontail, (Myriophyllum spicatum) Eurasian water milfoil.
