In former Pinus banksiana woods that had been clearcut within the last few years. Area now dominated by Populus tremuloides suckers, to about 1.5 m tall. Seems to occur mostly in shallow depressions in this otherwise relatively level area, that may be more mesic. Sandy loam, in full sun. Associates include Pteridium aquilinum, Rubus setosus, Vaccinium angustifolium, Danthonia spicata, Carex pensylvanica, Oryzopsis asperifolia, Agrostis hyemale, Waldsteinia fragarioides, and Gnaphalium macounii.
