Habitat: Thin floodplain forest at edge of Wisconsin River, Quercus bicolor, Acer saccharinum, Ulmus americana, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, with Laportea canadensis, Smilax tamnoides, Dioscorea villosa, Zanthoxylum americanum, Sambucus canadensis, Rudbeckia laciniata, Euonymus atropurpurea.
Occurrence Remarks: Common. Voucher for wood specimens at Lw, MADw.; Twining vine over shrubs or more rarely climbing to 10 m. onto trees. Largest stems to 1.3 cm. in diameter and ca. 12 years old if the closely spacing rings are annual rings; most stems are smaller. Fruit green, turning purple-black.
