Occurs in typical black ash seepage swamp with Symplocarpus foetidus and Carex bromoides abundant on mucky soil. This zone is a narrow band near base of upland and farther out, grades into a wet-mesic forest of Black ash/ white pine/yellow birch with less Carex bromoides and Symplocarpus and more Coptis trifoliata, Carex leptalea (occasional Circaea alpina).
