Habitat:
Occurs in high-quality wet-mesic forest on the St. Croix River bottomlands under 80-90% canopy cover of black ash, yellow birch, basswood, white pine and Acer rubrum. Sparse Carpinus caroliniana at 2-3m over 20% low shrubs. Herbaceous cover 80% including Symplocarpus foetidus, Carex bromoides, Athyrium filix-femina, Laportea canadensis, but mostly small herbs. Firm, woody peat and very lumpy ground surface with old down trunks, occasional tip-ups, and hummock/hollows. Boulders occasional. No obvious seepage qualities though seepage occurs to east, closer to valley slope. Poa paludigena rare in a moist hollow. Associates: Pilea sp., Galium triflorum, Ranunculus abortivus, Anemone quinquefolia, Mainathemum canandense, Viola sp., Mitella diphylla, Rubus pubescens.
