Rare in dry-mesic to mesic forested uplands (bur oak, basswood, Ostrya, Carpinus) above the Trade River in moist zone surrounding shallow, wet depressions (aspen, black ash, Cornus racemosa, Carex haydenii, Calamagrostis canadensis). Growing in shade in areas having diverse other graminoids such as Carex radiata, C. intumescens, C. gracillima, C. blanda, C. deweyana, C. hirtifolia, Luzula acuminata, Festuca subverticillata, and Milium effusum. Also in moist zone: Hydrophyllum virginianum, Rubus pubescens, and Fragaria virginiana. Searched several wet-depression margins.
