WIDNR - Muskeg

According to The Ecological Landscapes of Wisconsin a Muskeg "is an ombrotrophic or very weakly minerotrophic acid peatland community characterized by a substrate of moss hummocks and a thin scattering of stunted swamp conifers. Muskeg is floristically similar to Open Bog but differs structurally in the greater presence and higher cover of conifers." In addditon to the vascular plants listed below, mosses often form acontinuous, often hummocky, carpet. Species associated with Muskeg include Sphagnum angustifolium, S. centrale, S. fuscum, S. magellanicum, S. recurvum, and Pleurozium schreberi. Dicranum polysetum and Hylocomium splendens are sometimes present (possibly as holdovers from previous fen conditions).
