Etymology: Utricularia: from Latin utriculus, "a small bag or bladder," the common name of which is bladderwort
Plants: floating annual/perennial, up to 4" tall, aquatic forb; delicate stems horizontal just below the soil or floating on the water; roots delicate, from the leaf axils, sometimes with bladders
Leaves: long and narrow to 1 1/4" long, grass-like, along the stem
Flowers: purple, 5-parted, 1/2" long, 2 lipped, tipped backwards and facing upward with the spur almost horizontal; solitary on hair-fine, erect 3/4"-4" stalk, a tubular, notched bract without bractlets below; blooms July-Aug.
Habitat: shores, shallows, quiet water; in muddy soil
