Etymology: Populus: Latin for "poplar," derivation obscure
Plants: perennial tree to 60' tall with dark, furrowed bark; very narrow crown; almost vertical branches from near the base of trunk
Leaves: hairy when young, finely toothed, triangular-oval shape
Flowers: 2"-3" long hanging catkin
Conservation Status: Introduced - locally established
