Etymology: Platanus: from the Greek name platanos for the long-lived oriental plane tree
Plants: perennial tree to 125' tall, smooth bark peeling with age exposing the white to greenish new bark
Leaves: light green often with 3-5 shallow lobes, edges smooth to coarsely toothed
Flowers: blooms in the spring
Fruits: stalked "ball" of achenes
Habitat: moist; streambanks, lakes, ravines
Conservation Status: Special Concern
