Etymology: Myriophyllum: from Greek myrios, "numberless," and phyllon, "leaf," alluding to the many divisions of the submerged leaves of these aquatic plants
Plants: perennial, submersed aquatic; from hardy rhizomes Leaves: mostly in closely-spaced whorls but some scattered, short-stalked; finely pinnately-divided into 7-10 thread-like, paired leaflets Flowers: red to pink, 4-parted, small, with no winter buds; inflorescence a 2"-6" clustered spike held above the water with flowers from the axils of the sharply-toothed, whorled bracts Fruits: hard, 4-parted with a curved beak Habitat: water to 16' deep; in sediment soil Conservation Status: Native |
