Plants: erect to sagging, perennial, 4"-40" tall forb, usually with many upper branches; stems 4 -angled, smooth
Leaves: alternate, mostly stalkless
Flowers: 4-parted, stalkless; petals tiny and green or absent; inflorescence a long, interrupted, leafy spike; blooms July-Sept.
Habitat: swamps, marshes, wet prairies, streambanks
