Etymology: Liatris: meaning lost in antiquity
Plants: erect, perennial, to 24" tall forb; stems leafy; long and pointed roots
Leaves: with dots, mostly smooth, less than 1/5" wide
Flowers: head with 4-6 pink flowers, bracts (phyllaries) dotted and with a sharp tip; inflorescence with several to may heads in spike-like cluster; blooms Aug.-Oct.
Fruits: dry seed on fluffy pappus
Habitat: sun; dry; meadows, prairies; in sandy soil
Conservation Status: Endangered
