Etymology: Liatris: meaning lost in antiquity
Plants: erect, perennial, 6"-24" tall forb; stems leafy
Leaves: alternate, long, linear, up to 1/2" wide
Flowers: head 5/8" wide with 10-35 pink disk flowers, bracts (phyllaries) with sharp pointed tips; inflorescence with one to a few heads in spike-like cluster; blooms July-Sept.
Fruits: dry seed on fluffy pappus
Habitat: dry; prairies; in rocky, sandy soil
