Etymology: Heterotheca: derived from Greek heteros, "different," and theke, "ovary," from the unlike achenes of the ray and disk florets
Plants: erect, perennial, 8"-16" tall, usually hairy, bushy forb; taprooted
Leaves: many, mostly alike, alternate, mostly toothless, usually over 2" wide
Flowers: head 1" - 1 1/2" wide, usually 10-35 yellow rays, disks yellow and up to more than 1/2" wide; inflorescence with several heads together; blooms July-Oct.
Fruits: dry seed on fluffy pappus
Habitat: sun; dry; in sandy soil
Conservation Status: Native
