Etymology: Gratiola: from gratia for "grace" or "favor" referring to its supposed medicinal properties
Plants: erect, perennial, semi-aquatic, 4"-12" tall forb, when submersed only 1/2" tall and sterile; roots clustered
Leaves: opposite, with glandular spots, pointed, widest near the base
Flowers: bright yellow to white, 5-parted, 1/2"-2/3" long, 2 stamens, irregular lobes flaring at the mouth of the tube, lower lobes rounded, upper lobes nearly united at the top and hairy at the base; solitary from the leaf axils; blooms July-Sept.
Fruits: roundish capsule
Habitat: moist to wet; shores, soft water to 13' deep; in peaty, sandy, acidic soil
