Etymology: Gaillardia: after M. Gaillard de Charentonneau, an 18th-century French magistrate and patron of botany
Plants: erect, perennial, 8"-28" tall, hairy forb
Leaves: alternate, mostly narrow
Flowers: head 1 1/2"- 3" wide with 6-16 yellow, 1"- 1 1/3" long, 3-notched rays often with purplish/orange base; 1/2"-1" wide, purplish/orange disk; inflorescence usually 1 to a few heads on long stalks; blooms May-Sept.
Fruits: dry seed without a fluffy pappus
Habitat: sun; meadows, fields
Conservation Status: Introduced - escaped
