Etymology: Eleocharis: Greek elos for "marsh" and charis for grace, referring to marsh plant
Plants: erect, perennial, 9-30" tall, semi-aquatic, emergent sedge; stems emergent, stiff, thin, and triangular in X-section; submersed part sterile; spreading rhizomes
Leaves: only brown sheaths at base of stem
Flowers: inflorescence solitary spikelet at tip of stem
Fruits: brown, urn-shaped nutlet with cap about 1/2 size of nutlet on the top
Habitat: wet; shores, water to 40" deep, soft water
