Etymology: Dicentra: from the Greek dis, "twice," and centron, "spur," meaning "twice-spurred," in reference to the flower shape
Plants: erect, perennial, 4"-12" tall forb; rhizomes covered with large, yellow, pea- or corn kernel-shaped bulblets
Leaves: all basal, bluish-green, smooth, several times pinnately-divided
Flowers: white, 4-parted, 1/2" long, both petals spurred; spur heart-to-oval shaped; inflorescence a terminal cluster (raceme) of stalked flowers; blooms April-May
Fruits: capsule
Habitat: deciduous woods, often in rock outcrops; in rich, loamy soil
