Etymology: Stuckenia: probably for Wilhelm Adolf Stucken (1852-1901) headmaster of the Gottingen Gymnasium and amateur botanist associated with the Bremen herbarium
Plants: perennial aquatic, flower stalk slender either above or below surface; stems 1'-3' long, fan-like branches; slender rhizomes with many starchy tubers
Leaves: alternate, entire, with prominent midvein; very thin, sharp pointed, needle-like; stipules fused to leaf over most of length
Flowers: green to brown, small; inflorescence spike of spaced whorls
Fruits: oval-to-ovate, dry seed with a short beak
Habitat: water 3-7' deep or more
