Etymology: Platanthera: from the Greek for "flat" and "flower," hence "wide or flat anthered"
Plants: erect, perennial, 12"-28" tall forb
Leaves: lance-like to linear, occurring only along the stem
Flowers: greenish to yellow, 6-parted, 1/8"-1/3" wide, seemingly stalkless, lips not parted or fringed; bracts much longer than the flower; inflorescence a 2"-8" dense, stout spike of 15-40 flowers; blooms June-Sept.
Habitat: wet to moist; bogs, swamps, floodplains, prairies
