Etymology: Platanthera: from the Greek for "flat" and "flower," hence "wide or flat anthered"
Plants: erect, perennial, to 40" tall forb
Leaves: lance-like to linear, occurring only along the stem
Flowers: white, 6-parted, 1/3"-1/2" wide, lips not parted or fringed, blunt, wider at the base; petals lance-like, curving forward; inflorescence 4"-12" either dense or open spike-like cluster (raceme) of very short-stalked flowers
Habitat: wet; cold calcareous fens
