Plants: erect, perennial, 4"-16" tall forb, pale grayish with very fine hairs; stems usually spreading then abruptly erect
Leaves: stem leaves lance-like, the lower side more or less finely hairy
Flowers: red, 3-parted, stalks very hairy; inflorescence a 6" tall, branched, spike-like cluster (panicle) 1/3 to 1/2 the height of the plant
Fruits: 3-parted capsule with 3-4 seeds
Habitat: woods, prairies, shores; in sandy soil
