River floodplain, brushy and wooded areas along old railroad, now a hiking/biking trail. With Acer saccharinum, Q. macrocarpa.
Tree 16 cm in diameter; four trunks from base, the largest 25 cm in diameter, probably from damage early in growth; many stiff old dead branchlets persisting. Voucher for wood specimen, MADw. Bark tight. Lower, shaded leaves much less deeply lobed and similiar to those of Q. rubra (vegetative buds similar but leaf lobing more unequal) and Q. velutina (but vegetative buds much smaller and not pubescent). Sun leaves very healthy and deeply lobed; this tree has not yet affected y a recent outbreak of oak wilt severely affecting this species in adjacent woods. Acorns not mature.
